The buffalo was selected as the divisional insignia because it is said the Indians called colored soldiers "buffaloes." The color of the buffalo varies according to the arm of the service.


Nickname

"Buffalo" Division.

Background

Colored National Army Division established by the War Department on 24 October 1917.  Although many of the officers are colored, general and field  officers and officers in the technical branches and field artillery above the grade of first lieutenant, are white.  Draftees were from across the United States.  Movement overseas commenced on 29 May 1918 and was completed by 12 July 1918.
