It was known as the Custer Division, in honor of General Custer and also the camp at which it was trained, the insignia consisting of the initials C. D.


Nickname

"Custer" Division, for General George Armstrong Custer, and from Camp Custer, MI, where the division was formed.

Background

National Army Division established by the War Department on 5 August 1917 to be established at Camp Custer, MI.  Draftees were from Michigan and Wisconsin.  Movement overseas commenced on 11 July 1918 and was completed by 11 August 1918.  On 28 July 1918, the division was designated as the 4th Depot Division.  Pulled from the 85th Division, the 339th Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion 310th Engineers, 337th Ambulance Company and 337th Field Hospital form the AEF in North Russia.
