It was organized at Camp Upton, Long Island, and went to France in April, 1918, the first National Army division to go overseas. The insignia is self-explanatory.

August 25, 1917

The 77th Division was organized August 25, 1917, at Camp Upton, New York. The majority of officers and all enlisted men were from New York State and practically all of the enlisted men from the Metropolitan District. The Division is named the "Liberty Division" and its shoulder insignia is a Statue of Liberty in gold on a blue background.


Nickname

"Metropolitan" Division, as the original members were draftees from New York City.  Sometimes known as the "Liberty" Division.

Background

Established 5 August 1917 by the War Department to be established at Camp Upton, NY.  National Army Division composed of draftees from New York City.  Commenced overseas movement 28 March 1918 and completed same by 13 May 1918.
