It was known as the Sunshine Division, and the insignia carries out the idea.


Nickname

"Sunshine" Division.

Background

On 18 July 1917, the War Department designated National Guard troops of Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah to form the 40th Division.  The units congregate at Camp Kearney, CA, in August.  Overseas movement commences on 26 July 1918.  On 16 August 1918, the 40th Division is designated as the 6th Depot Division.
