Their device shows the old Santa Fe cross, which was employed to mark the Santa Fe Trail in the old days. This trail started near Camp Doniphan. This emblem was adopted for marking the property and baggage soon after the organization of the division.

Background

Kansas and Missouri National Guard units were designated on 18 July 1917 to form the 35th Division.  Concentration at Camp Doniphan (Ft. Sill, OK) begins on 23 August 1917.  Movement overseas begins 3 April 1918 and is completed by 11 June 1918.
