The insignia of an arrow was selected because they "shot through every line the Boche put before them."

Composed of Wisconsin and Michigan National Guardsmen; insignia a Red Arrow, signifying that the Division shot through every line the enemy put before it; given the name of "Les Terribles" by the French; commanded in all its actions by Major General Wm. G. Haan and in the Army of Occupation by Major General Wm. Lassiter.

"Red Arrow" Division; also know as the "Iron Jaws" Division.

Background

Michigan and Wisconsin National Guard units were called into Federal Service on 15 July 1917 and directed to form the 32d Division on 18 July 1917.  Concentration at Camp MacArthur, TX, began on 4 August 1917.  Movement overseas began on 2 January 1918 and was completed by 12 March 1918.  On 4 February 1918, the division was designated as the Replacement Division for the I Corps, and subsequently transfers many officers and men of the 128th Infantry to the 1st Division.  On 10 April 1918, the division is once again designated a combat division and receives replacements to bring it up to full strength.
